Shaun Richards
Richards attended Hagerstown Junior College in Maryland before transferring to UNC-Wilmington, where he earned a BA in Art in 1999. In 2003, he enrolled in SUNY Empire State College as a non-matriculated graduate student. Richards left NYC in the spring of 2006, returning to Raleigh, North Carolina to pursue art full time. He was awarded the Regional Emerging Artist Residency at Artspace, and was featured in Southwest Art's annual emerging artist. He has shown at Cameron Museum in Wilmington, NC. He was awarded best in Show for his piece “Bootleg Romanticism”, by Dr. Larry Wheeler, Director of the North Carolina Museum of Art. Richards was recently awarded an upcoming residency at The Bemis Center in Omaha, NE. He is represented by Flanders Art Gallery in Raleigh. Shaun Richards calls his class "Contemporary Concepts in Narrative" a practical exploration in narrative painting with an art historical perspective. He uses "the figure" as an overview to focus on developing painting skills and concepts that goes beyond portrait painting. He will emphasize on contemporary painting practices with touch of realism using the figure.
